Mosaica

Mosaica is a customizable screensaver with a content generated by users of flickr.
I made it just to check possibilities of an online screensaver with dynamic content, but now I think it could be interesting for any user as a nice tool to explore the flickr.

This small video shows the look & feel of this screensaver:

(Many thanks to hírbehozó for the video)

The screensaver works both on PC and Mac and your computer should have an internet connection in order to use this screensaver.

You can dowload the Mosaica screensaver here. Current version is 2.0.

Hi! I just found Mosaica last night. Great program!

Just one thing - I use two screens. It looks like the screensaver when it kicks in is running two independent versions, one for each screen. That wouldn’t be a problem, except it appears that the information retrieval isn’t working properly on at least one of those independent versions.

Let me explain further:

When the screensaver kicks in, the zoomed-in image on both screens is identical. However, one screen usually shows the correct description, whereas the other shows the description of another image (I’m using Mosaica to look at my own Flickr photos). My laptop’s built-in LCD at times shows the wrong info, and at other times my external monitor shows the wrong info.

I got the idea that the screensaver is running two independent versions when I left the system alone for a while - when I returned, my laptop’s built-in LCD was zooming to one image, and the external monitor was showing a completely different image.

Help? Ideas?

Thanks for your comment, Philip. I should say, I didn’t try to run it on two screens, but now I will find a way to check it. I’m going to make some updates in next two weeks, and I hope I could find a sollutions for this problem.
Thanks,
consta

Now it works with two monitors…

Hi Consta.

Seems to be working :) , though unless I’m not watching it long enough, the zooming on pictures only seems to appear on the laptop’s built-in LCD.

Any chance you can set it to pick pictures to zoom across both monitors?

Or even better, treat each monitor individually and zoom pictures independently on both monitors? (i.e. if have two monitors, see a different zoomed picture on each monitor - that is, two different pictures - at the same time)?

BTW, my wife, who hates computers because they “take” me away from here, loves the screen saver! She asks where the pictures are all the time…

Hi Philip,
it’ really so, the screensaver shows zoom image just on one monitor. I think it has some reasons. Different images on both monitors make more traffic and user should wait more till images come. And if I have two different images in zoom at the same time, I don’t know, which image should be opened in browser by pressing the space button. At another way, the same image on two monitors looks not so interesting, as for me…

Anyway, many thanks for your feedback, Philip. If I get some ideas, how to make this screensaver more interesting on two monitors, I will do it. And a little bit more free time for this project will be nice too :)

Hi Consta,
as a flickr fan I really love your great screensaver!
Thanks for this good job!

I would love it if you could get it working for the intel imac.

Thanks.

I had this screensaver and loved it - however after 10.4.9 on the Intel macs it stopped working - I would also be greatful if you could get it working.

Have been using mosaica for a week now, and I like it better every day.

I’ve even been searching for a not Flickr, but local file version … that doesn’t exist … yet.

Thanks for the great work, and sharing it.

At last! I’ve been searching for this screensaver ever since I saw it running in an art supplies shop in a tiny village in Tuscany. The shop was closed, so I couldn’t go in and find out what it was.

I’ve tried all the other Flickr screensavers but this is the best there is. Thank you very much.

I have broblem with my McAfee Virusscanner Enterprise 8.0 and the screen saver. Sometimes it blocks the saver with this message:
VirusScan Alert!
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe:C:\WINDOWS\system32\mosaica dir\saver1.dll:GetProcAddress
bo:heap
Blocked by Buffer Overflow Protection

Any Ideas?

Hi

I think your screensaver looks, great. One thing though, the text at the bottom right that’s sticky. Shouldn’t it move around or disappear for a while to prevent it from being burned into the screen?

Das Video von dem Bildschirmschoner hab ich schon lang gesucht. Super!

This screen saver rules, big time. Everything about it is so perfect — many compliments (and thanks).

If I can offer my suggestion/request too, have you considered an option to enlarge a photo of the user’s choosing, e.g. maybe right-click and then that one will be the next one enlarged? That way, the user can see a photo that interests him more closely without having to exit out.

Just a suggestion, thanks…

Very nice screensaver, but i have the same trouble like “Markus form Germany”. Any suggestions ?

Hi!

I like your screensaver very much :-) Unfortunately I have a problem when I try to manually select a picture (mode e). The error message says that the picture can’t be displayed because Firefox is already running/system has to be restarted. Do you have an idea what I can do to avoid this and still get the picture displayed (beside existing Firefox every time before I plan to start the screensaver ;-) ).

Cheers,
Jan

Hallo,
